West Virginia - 2021

School Year: 2025    Survey: West Virginia GEAR UP Family Survey: 2025–2026 School Year, Grades 10–12

Your school is part of the West Virginia (WV) GEAR UP program. GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. The program is run by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC). A company called ICF is doing a study of WV GEAR UP on behalf of WVHEPC to make sure GEAR UP is helping students as best as it can.

GEAR UP is asking all primary caregivers of students in Grades 10–12 at your student’s school to do a survey. A primary caregiver is the person who spends the most time taking care of the student. A primary caregiver could be the student’s mother, father, stepparent, foster parent, grandparent, a friend’s parent, or an older sibling among others. The survey asks questions about what you know and think about college as an option for your student. It asks what you think about other options after high school. It asks about your goals for your student for high school and beyond and where your student is on the path to achieving those goals. It asks about how you think those goals can be met. Finally, it asks questions about what school activities for families you have participated in.

This survey takes about 15–20 minutes to complete. Filling out this survey is voluntary—you do not have to do it if you do not want. You can skip questions or stop taking the survey at any time. There are no consequences if you do not take the survey or do not finish the survey. Your answers to the survey questions will be kept private by the ICF and WVHEPC research team. We will only summarize answers to questions across groups of primary caregivers in reports. Your individual answers will not be shared in any reports. Your name will not be on the survey and your individual answers will not be shared with anyone at your student’s school. Completing the survey presents very little risk to you. Completing the survey will help to improve college and career programs at your school and other schools in West Virginia. As an incentive for taking the survey, you will be entered into a raffle for a $50 Visa gift card.
